Do you get LinkedIn messages like this?
“Hi John, thanks for connecting! I see you’re a [insert fake personalization here]. Here’s a bunch of information about my business that you didn’t ask for, along with some ‘too good to be true’ sounding claims. Now, I have no idea if you even need my service or if you’re even the right person to talk to. Then again, who cares what YOU want? Let’s book time on my calendar to explore mutual synergies …”
Excuse me while throw my phone against the wall. 🤪
Today’s LinkedIn user is drowning in 1-on-1 messages.
They’re checking LinkedIn while standing in line for coffee, between meetings, or hiding in the bathroom from their kids (just me?).
They don’t have time for your life story.
They don’t have the mental energy to answer your qualifying questions.
They definitely don’t want to write you back with their life story or current business situation.
And that’s assuming you don’t just hammer them with the typical spam-filled, generic sales pitches we’re all sick of getting on a daily basis.
The good news here?
There’s a much better (and more effective) way to generate leads in your LinkedIn DMs.
The One-Sentence Qualifier That Changes Everything
Here’s the exact template that generates INSTANT leads:
“Hi [Name], can I send you my free eBook on [benefit your prospect wants]?”
or
“Hi [Name], can I send you my best free tips on how [niche audience] can [get a benefit they want]?
That’s it.
One question.
Yes or No.
Here’s an example of how I use it in cold outreach for a niche audience (Franchise Consultants) that our agency serves:
- Hi Mike – can I send you a free digital copy of my book “LinkedIn Lead Generation for Franchise Consultants”?
- Hi Sally – can I send you my best free tips on how franchise consultants can generate qualified leads here on LinkedIn?
Why this works:
- It takes 2 seconds to read
- It requires zero thought to answer
- It immediately qualifies interest
- It offers value, not a pitch
The Psychology Behind The Simplicity
Picture your ideal prospect right now.
They’ve got 47 unread LinkedIn messages. Their phone’s buzzing with Slack notifications. They’re trying to clear their inbox before their next Zoom call.
Your paragraph about “synergies” and “touching base” and “exploring opportunities” makes their brain hurt.
But “Can I send you something free that solves your problem?”
That’s a quick “yes” or “sure” or even just a thumbs up emoji.
You’ve made it easy to say yes.
And here’s the kicker – if they say no or don’t respond? They weren’t a prospect anyway.
Move on.
No time wasted writing War and Peace to someone who was never going to do business with you anyway.
The Follow-Up Sequence That Converts
Now, when someone says “Yes” to that first message, here’s where the magic happens.
Message #2 (Immediately after their yes):
Awesome! Here’s the link: [your content]
Also, unless LinkedIn’s lying to me, looks like you live in Chicago – my apologies in advance if you’re a Bears fan! 🏈
Now you’ve:
- Delivered the value
- Started building rapport
- Shown personality
- Made them smile
Simple tip: Look at where someone lives and insert a personal comment – for me, I love to talk trash about local sports teams. (Even if someone isn’t a sports fan, they’ll get the reference.) Whatever it is, just insert your own unique personality and what you’d say or ask someone about if you found out they lived in Chicago.
Message #3 (3 days later):
Hey [Name], just wanted to make sure you got the [free content]? The framework I outline on page 4 specifically addresses [a huge pain point they likely have].
Short. Specific. Helpful.
Nurture the conversation along until:
- They tell you they’ve read your free content
- They tell you what they thought of it – if it resonated, if it was helpful, etc.
- They tell you if they’re facing similar challenges in their situation (which opens the door to a live call to see if you can help them directly)
When They Ghost You (And Some Will)
This is where amateurs quit and professionals thrive.
If you have a once-promising conversation go “cold” in the LinkedIn DMs despite your follow ups, try some humor.
Send them the “Well, we’re waiting” GIF from Caddyshack:

Add this text below it:
Sorry [Name], I couldn’t resist! 😂
Did you still want to chat about [topic], or should I cease my politely persistent follow-up?
Why does this work?
- Humor disarms resistance
- You gave them an out (reducing pressure)
- The GIF stops their scroll
The Rosie the Dog Option
When all else fails, I send a picture of my dog Rosie …

I add this message below it:
[NAME] – This is what Rosie the Dog does when I don’t respond to her requests for walks. LOL.
Should I start a vigil outside your LinkedIn inbox until I hear back about [topic we were discussing], or are you going to go in a different direction?
No worries either way!
I’m not kidding. This works.
People can ignore sales messages.
Nobody ignores dogs!
Bonus Tip: Use the LinkedIn Mobile App Features
LinkedIn’s mobile app lets you send personalized audio and video messages:
Why do this?
First, NOBODY else is doing it, ensuring you instantly stand out from a sea of inbox sameness.
Second, you also stand out as a real human who cares enough to record a personal message.
Your LinkedIn Messaging Playbook
- Start with the 1 question free content / tips offer to qualify interest
- Ask yes/no questions only
- Lead with value, not pitches
- Personalize your follow up (look at their LinkedIn profile for ideas!) and be human
- Follow up until you get a hard “no” … or you’re dead! (seriously)
- Use humor when appropriate
- Send personalized audio memos and/or video messages to stand out
When it comes to winning business on LinkedIn, the money is in the mailbox, but only if you know what to say.
And now you do!
The Bottom Line
While everyone else is writing novels in LinkedIn DMs, explaining their life story and asking for “synergistic partnerships,” you can be qualifying leads with 1 simple question.
Simple beats sophisticated.
Every. Single. Time.
Stop overthinking your LinkedIn messages. Start sending that one simple question to start things off.
Once you get that first “yes,” then personalize and nurture things along to the point where a live call becomes a natural next step in the conversation.
Your close rate will thank you.
Your bank account will, too!
